Liberalism is a political and moral philosophy based on rights of individual , liberty, consent of the governed , political equality , the right to private property, and equality before the law. Liberals generally support private property, market economies, individual rights including human rights and civil rights, liberal democracy, secularism , rule of law, economic and political feeedom , freedom of speech , freedom of the press, freedom of assembly, and freedom of religion. Liberalism is frequently cited as the dominant ideology of modern history. The philopher John Locke is often credited with founding liberalism as a distinct tradition based on social contract arguing that each man has natural right to life , liberty and property and governments should not violent these rights. Liberalism became distinct movement is age of enlightenment gaining popularity among western philophers and economists. Liberalism sought to replace the norms of state religion, absolute monarchy , the divine rights of Kings , and traditional conservatism , with representative democracy , rule of law, and equality under the law. Before 1920 the main ideological opponents of liberalism were communism, concervatism , and socialism. Liberalism then faced major ideological challenges from fascism and Marxism - Leninism as new opponents. Liberal democracies found them self as the winners in both world wars and cold war. Fascism , Islam, and Marxism are not for liberalism. Liberalism can be on the Left , social liberalism , or on the right , conservative liberalism and Classical liberalism.
